A celebration of the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela is 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, OASIS Lounge (room 150).

The event will open with a short film about Mandela and continue with a discussion about civil service and Mandela's impact on the world.

The event is free and open to students, faculty and staff.

Mandela, an anti-apartheid revolutionary who served as president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, died Dec. 5. He was 95 years old.

Mandela was the first black person to hold office in South Africa. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by addressing institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation.

The event is hosted by the [William H. Thompson Scholars Learning Community](http://www.unl.edu/wht/home).
