For the 15th year, UNL is offering a weeklong series of events dedicated to educating and encouraging individuals to take a stand against violence. Organized by the UNL Women’s Center, the UNL Week Without Violence is Oct. 13-19.

Events open with a “Campus Safety Lunch and Learn” presentation, noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Nebraska Union. UNL police officers Koan Nissen and David Dibelka will lead a discussion on campus safety concerns. Information will also be presented on how UNL Police Department resources create a safer campus.

Other Week Without Violence events include:

• Women Write Resistance, 7 p.m. Oct. 14, Nebraska Union — Laura Madeline Wiseman and other authors read their works from “Women Write Resistance,” an anthology of poetry that celebrates the utilization of transformative art in the movement against gender violence.

• “Campus Responses to Relationship Violence,” noon, Oct. 15, Nebraska Union — Brown Bag Discussion co-sponsored by the Ethics Center about responding to disclosure of abuse in the classroom or other campus settings (special focus for faculty, teaching assistants or students in advising/mentoring roles). To register and reserve lunch, email Adam R. Thompson at ethics@unl.edu by 4 p.m. Oct. 9 with the subject line “Brown Bag Lunch.”

• Dish It Up: Take Back the Night sponsored by OASIS and Sigma Psi Zeta, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16, Gaughan Multicultural Center — Open discussion about relationship and gender violence in society. Refreshments will be provided. Following the event, a balloon release and moment of silence to help raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault will be offered on the Nebraska Union Plaza.

• Voices of Hope Open House and Vigil, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Oct. 17, Voices of Hope, 2545 N St. — Information about Voices of Hope programs and services. Includes a 7:30 p.m. candlelight vigil to commemorate lives lost to relationship violence.

• Kristin’s Story Sponsored by Alpha Chi Omega and Delta Delta Delta, 7 p.m., Oct. 28, Nebraska Union — Andrea Cooper will discuss the suicide of her daughter Kristin Cooper, a 20-year-old college student who was raped by a friend.
