High school students seeking transformative pre-college experiences can apply for two free summer programs hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business.

Discover Accounting and the DREAMBIG Academy provide insight into potential careers in the world of business and a preview of college life at the university. High school juniors can apply to both programs and seniors are also eligible for Discover Accounting.

Applications are due April 8.

Discover Accounting

Discover Accounting, June 1-3, gives current high school juniors and seniors a look at what majoring in accounting at Nebraska would offer and the potential careers associated with the field. Students stay in a residence hall, work on projects with current accounting students and network with industry professionals during tours of local companies.

Jill Trucke, assistant professor of practice in accountancy, leads the pre-college program. She sees Discover Accounting as a chance to gain insight into the field of accounting that students might not receive in high school.

“If you have any sort of interest in business, whether in accounting or not, you should apply for Discover Accounting,” Trucke said. “Nebraska Business alum Warren Buffett (class of ’51) said, ‘accounting is the language of business,’ and this program allows students to explore the field and see if it is for them.”

DREAMBIG Academy

For high school juniors looking to learn more about themselves, the world of business, along with diversity and inclusion, the DREAMBIG Academy will be held July 17-20. Any person can nominate students for the program, whether they are a counselor, teacher, parent or friend. Requirements for the program include current high school junior, a minimum 2.5 GPA, an interest in business and meet at least one of the following criteria: first-generation college student, underrepresented identity or meet federal guidelines for low-income status or qualify for free or reduced lunch. A five-time gold award winner by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education District VI, the program emphasizes leadership, networking skills and success in the business world. Upon completion of the program, participants also qualify for the $2,000 Emerging Leaders Scholarship.

Mark Barrera, assistant director of recruitment and analytics, helps lead the DREAMBIG Academy. He said he wants students in the program to feel comfortable and at home at the university.

“Past DREAMBIG Academy students tell us they learned more about themselves during the program than they expected. During the program, they find guidance and gain the confidence needed to pursue their college and career aspirations. Many past attendees choose to stay involved by serving as mentors, which only benefits the academy even more,” Barrera said. “If you know a student who would benefit from this program, please nominate them today.”
