UNL’s Glenn Korff School of Music presents its sixth annual New Music from UNL Jazz Writers Concert at 7:30 p.m. March 10 in the Kimball Recital Hall. This program features the newest works for jazz orchestra by UNL’s vibrant community of composer-arrangers.
The program begins with the UNL Big Band, directed by Patrick Brown, performing music by Thad Jones, Tom Kubis, Duke Ellington and Rob McConnell. The Big Band will conclude their set with the premiere of DMA composer Derek Molacek’s, “Blues For Li Fou.”
The second set of the concert features UNL’s new “crossover” ensemble, the UNL Jazz Orchestra “2.0” directed by Eric Richards, associate professor of composition. Their set will present a program of premiere performances, to include:
“Essay for Jazz Orchestra” by UNL alumnus David von Kampen
“A New Hope” by John Kosch (BME ’16)
“Nature Boy” by Eden Ahbez and arranged by Vince Norman. The piece was commissioned by the UNL Jazz Orchestra to feature composer-vocalist Caitlin Gilmore (BM ’15).
“Suite for the Forgotten” by Masayoshi Ishikawa (DMA ’15). The piece is the first movement of a large-scale work for jazz orchestra composed to increase awareness and support for the victims of the Fukushima disaster in Japan.
“Claude’s Groovy Dream Sequence” by Darren Pettit (DMA ’16)
“Hopeful Spirit Rising” by Eric Richards, originally commissioned by the Nihon University Rhythm Society Orchestra in Tokyo.
Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors.
