“From Excellent to Extraordinary” is the theme of the investiture of Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, as the ninth president of the University of Nebraska system. The installation ceremony is 2:30 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Rotunda of Nebraska’s State Capitol.
The ceremony will be shown live online.
Rob Schafer of Beatrice, chairman of the NU Board of Regents, will preside over the ceremony, during which Gold will present his vision and reflect on the university’s opportunities in the years ahead. Gold began his tenure as president on July 1, following a decade as chancellor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center that also included service as chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha and executive vice president and provost for the NU system.
His installation as president comes 10 years to the day after he was installed as UNMC chancellor and five years to the day after he was installed as UNO chancellor.
“This event is an opportunity for all Nebraskans to celebrate the work and impact of the University of Nebraska as we look ahead to our next chapter,” Schafer said. “We look forward to hearing President Gold outline his vision for the future at this important moment for our university and state.”
Gen. (Ret.) John Hyten will deliver keynote remarks during the ceremony. Hyten served as the 11th vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff after a 40-year career in the U.S. Air Force. Before retiring from the military in 2021, his role as vice chairman made him the nation’s second-highest ranking military officer.
Other dignitaries set to offer remarks include Gov. Jim Pillen and U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer. As is customary for investiture ceremonies for new university executives, representatives from the University of Nebraska’s students, faculty, staff, administration and alumni, as well as the philanthropic community, the higher education community and the community at large, will also provide greetings.
Investitures are long-held academic traditions meant to bring a community together to celebrate a new leader. The ceremony includes an academic procession of faculty and staff, as well as musical selections performed by University of Nebraska talent.
