Cover of Joy Castro’s forthcoming novel, “One Brilliant Flame.” She collaborated with designer Kimberly Glyder to develop the cover art, using it to reflect some of the story’s major themes. The heavy use of red, and the curling gold graphics, represent the flames of the Great Fire of Key West, a key event in the plot. The book’s title is wrapped in a cigar label motif, as all the characters are tied to the transnational Cuban cigar industry.

Along with the graphite drawings, "We Are Nebraska" includes an acrylic paint pattern that spans the bottom of the artwork. A signature component of Francisco Souto's artwork, the pattern is an ode to Carlos Cruz-Diez, a fellow Venezuelan artist who ranks among the greatest artistic innovators of the 20th century. In this pattern, Souto features the yellow, blue and red of the Venezuelan flag, connecting his home nation with the Nebraska images above.
