The Sheldon Museum of Art will host a three-day series of events related to “The Unfolding Center,” an exhibition that mingles the worlds of graphite drawing and poetry.
The events, which are April 5-7, will include a lunchtime talk led by UNL’s Grace Bauer, professor of English. The Sheldon will also host a talk by the exhibition artists and a poetry reading. All events are free and open to the public.
“The Unfolding Center,” which debuted in 2013 at the Santa Fe Art Institute, is an exploration by visual artist Susan York and poet Arthur Sze into how their respective disciplines work together. On view through May 8, the exhibit features 11 pairs of abstract graphite drawings presented with source texts.
York and Sze will participate in a gallery talk on the collaborative exhibition at 5:30 p.m. April 5 at the museum. For the project, Sze composed poems in nine-month consultation with York. Then, with input from Sze, York created minimalist images to accompany each verse.
At 5:30 p.m. April 6, Sze, recipient of the American Book Award, will read from his own work. A conversation between Sze; Ted Kooser, University of Nebraska Presidential Professor and former U.S. Poet Laureate; and Kwame Dawes, Chancellor’s Professor of English and editor of UNL’s Prairie Schooner magazine, follows the poetry reading. A book signing and reception will close out the evening.
And, Bauer will lead “Doubletake at Lunchtime,” a 15-minute discussion during which a presenter provides a personal experience or interpretation about an artwork on display at the Sheldon. Bauer’s presentation begins at 12:15 p.m. April 7.
