UNL’s third annual Online and Blended symposium will be held Nov. 4 in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, Room 212. The symposium will focus on keeping students involved, motivated and actively learning. The registration deadline is Oct. 27.
The luncheon keynote, “Terms of Engagement: Understanding Student Engagement in Today’s University Classroom,” will be presented by Elizabeth F. Barkley, professor of music at Foothill College, Los Altos, California.
Barkley has more than three decades as an innovative and reflective teacher. She has received numerous honors and awards, including being named California’s Higher Education Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. She has also been formally recognized by the California state legislature for her contributions to undergraduate education and has been selected as “Innovator of the Year” in conjunction with the National League for Innovation. Additionally, the California Virtual Campus selected her Musics of Multicultural America course as “Best Online Course” and she was named one of two Carnegie Scholars in the discipline of music by the Carnegie Foundation in conjunction with the Pew Charitable Trusts.
The keynote is co-sponsored by the UNL Office of Online and Distance Education and NU Online Worldwide as part of Campus Conversations, a speaker series on key topics in distance education. Campus Conversations are hosted throughout the year on each campus and also web-streamed live for faculty and staff across the university system.
Barkley will also facilitate a workshop, “Practical and Effective Strategies to Get Your Students Engaged.”
