A retirement reception for Darrel Kinnan is 2 to 4 p.m., Dec. 12 in Hamilton Hall, Room 227. The event is free and open to the public.
Kinnan is retiring from the chemistry department after 38 years of service. He started at UNL in 1976 working in the department’s second floor stock room. Kinnan was promoted to his current position, undergraduate chemistry lab manager, in 1984.
Kinnan earned a degree from UNL in 1976. He served as a Green Beret medic in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971.
During his career, Kinnan earned two Applause awards from the College of Arts and Sciences and a Kudos award from the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. He also played an integral role in helping plan for and development of the renovation of the second floor undergraduate labs and resource center in Hamilton Hall.
“Being a part of trying to make the chemistry undergraduate classes a positive learning experience for teaching assistants and students has always been important to me,” Kinnan said.
In his 38 years with UNL, Kinnan has worked with 10 department chairs and four general chemistry coordinators. He also helped lead departmental outreach efforts, preparing and presenting during events like Big Red Road Show and Chemistry Day.
