Chiara concert series opens with ‘Brahms by Heart’

The Chiara String Quartet will perform the first concert of the 2015-2016 Hixson-Lied concert series at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in Kimball Recital Hall.

The program, “Brahms by Heart,” will include Brahms’ String Quartet Op. 51, No. 1 in C minor; his String Quartet Op. 51, No. 1 in A minor; and his String Quartet Op. 67 in B-flat Major played entirely from memory.

Other concerts in the series are Oct. 23, Jan. 29 and March 7. Tickets, available at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, are $20 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students. Additional ticket information is available at http://www.liedcenter.org or by calling 402-472-4747.

Renowned for bringing fresh excitement to traditional string quartet repertoire, as well as for creating insightful interpretations of new music, the Chiara String Quartet captivates its audiences throughout the country.

The Chiara has established itself as among America’s most respected ensembles. They are currently Hixson-Lied Artists-in-Residence at UNL’s Glenn Korff School of Music.

The repertoire for the other concerts in the series are:

  • “Chiara Soiree,” 7:30 p.m., Oct. 23, will feature Arthur Foote’s “A Night Piece and Scherzo,” both for flute and string quartet with flutist John Baily; Dohnányi’s “Serenade” in C Major for String Trio; and Brahms’, “Piano Quintet” in F minor, Op. 34 with pianist Mark Clinton.

  • “The Adolf Busch Legacy,” 7:30 p.m., Jan. 29, featuring a program of Busch’s “Quintet for Saxophone and String Quartet” with saxophonist Paul Haar and Beethoven’s “String Quartet” in E-flat Major, Op. 127.

  • “Bartók Premiere,” 7:30 p.m., March 7, featuring the world premiere of Gabriela Lena Frank’s Bartók piano transcriptions for string quartet and her “Canciones Populares” and a collaborative piece to be announced with the winner of the “Play with the Chiaras” competition.
