A retirement reception for Linda Schwartzkopf, director of fraternity and sorority life, is 4 to 5:30 p.m. April 4 at the Lied Commons, 301 N 12th Street.

Schwartzkopf is retiring in May after 35 years of service to the university. She joined the university in 1984 as a recruiter in pre-admission activities. She also served as the director for student judicial affairs before moving to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life in 1997.

Under Schwartzkopf’s leadership, membership in the fraternity and sorority community has grown from 2,800 to 4,362 members. She is especially proud of the increase in the number of students of color choosing to join Nebraska’s Greek community.

“In 1998 and 1999, the percentage of our Greek community that identified as a racial minority was 2.7 percent,” Schwartkopf said. “Today, that percentage has increased to 10.1 percent. We also have added Latina/Latino and Asian-focused fraternity and sorority chapters to our community, as well as increased the number of historically African-American chapters on campus.”

Schwartzkopf has earned many awards during her time at the university, including the James V. Griesen Exemplary Service to Students Award, the Kudos award from the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, Mortar Board People Who Inspire award, Parents’ Recognition award and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Citizen of the Year honor.

The reception is free and open to the campus community.
