“Eating Animals,” a documentary that examines modern food production practices and advocates for ethical farming alternatives, will be the focus of several screenings and events beginning Sept. 21 at Nebraska’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Based on the bestselling book by Jonathan Safran Foer and narrated by co-producer Natalie Portman, “Eating Animals” traces the history of food production in the United States and investigates the environmental, economic, and public health consequences of our current corporate farming model. These consequences include the exploitation of animals, the risky use of antibiotics and hormones, and the pollution of our air, soil, and water. It also offers attainable solutions, spotlighting farmers who have pushed back against industrial agriculture with more humane practices.

The first screening begins at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 and will be followed by a question and answer session featuring James Keen, associate professor of veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences, one of the subjects in the film; and Simone Friedman, head of philanthropy and impact investment for EJF Philanthropies and producer of the film.
