The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has partnered with a nonprofit organization to assist employees who may qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and one-time limited waiver.

The student loan forgiveness program was approved in 2007 by the U.S. Congress to encourage college graduates to work full-time in public service roles. It makes available tax-free forgiveness on any remaining student loan balance when a graduate has made at least 120 qualifying, on-time payments while being employed full-time in an eligible public service job — including working in higher education. Available through Oct. 31, the one-time limited waiver allows borrowers to receive credit for past payments that would not otherwise qualify.

“My goal is to get this out to our employees and let them know these resources are available to assist them with an application and waiver forms,” said Justin Chase Brown, director of scholarships and financial aid. “It’s a limited opportunity, but one that can benefit individuals who have dedicated their career to public service.”

Details about the program are available via Inceptia, a non-profit division of the National Student Loan Program that assists borrowers and their families with financial aid management, default prevention and financial education.
