Pound Hall to remain open during 2015-16 academic year

Pound Hall, 513 N. 17th St.

Pound Residence Hall will again be open to University of Nebraska-Lincoln students this fall, officials said.

This is the second consecutive year that Pound, which had originally been taken offline in early 2014, has remained open in response to student demand for on-campus housing.

Ten of Pound’s 12 floors will be used, said Brian Shanks, UNL’s assistant director of housing. About 200 students will occupy the residence hall, about 75 of which are freshmen. Another roughly 130 students will occupy single rooms in the hall.

“We’ve found that singles are very popular, and we’re pleased to have the option of continuing Pound Hall’s service for another year in that role,” Shanks said. “This way, we can continue to provide quality on-campus housing for all students who are seeking it.”

Housing contracts will continue to be accepted through August, Shanks said, which means an exact number of students living on campus is difficult to precisely calculate at this point. But housing officials have a clear enough picture to know that Pound, which has housed UNL students at 513 N. 17th St. since 1969, will be needed when fall classes begin Aug. 24.

Overall, it is the third time in the last three academic years that residence halls that had originally been scheduled to be taken offline have been reopened. In 2013, the university re-activated Cather Hall for one year to accommodate a larger-than-expected number of students who wished to live on campus.

To accommodate growing demand for on-campus housing, UNL has opened three apartment-style residence halls east of 17th and R streets since 2010, adding more than 1,500 beds. It also is beginning construction of a new 370-bed hall on East Campus that will offer a mix of traditional and apartment-style units. The facility, expected to open in 2017, will replace Burr and Fedde residence halls.

Also in 2017, a new Cather-Pound-Neihardt Dining Center will open. The state-of-the-art facility also will include an events center as well as new University Housing offices.
