‘Jayhawkers’ director to attend Ross screening

JAYHAWKERS director Kevin Willmott
"Jayhawkers" director Kevin Willmott will attend the opening night screening of his film at 7:30 p.m. April 1 at the Ross.

Director Kevin Willmott will attend an opening night screening of “Jayhawkers” at 7:30 p.m. April 1 at UNL’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. He will also participate in a question and answer session with the audience.

“Jayhawkers” follows Phog Allen, head coach of the University of Kansas men’s basketball team from 1919 to 1956, as he recruited Wilt Chamberlain and the trials and tribulations the legendary black athlete faced when he played for the Jayhawks. The story parallels events in the Civil Rights Movement.

Shot in Kansas cities Lawrence, Topeka and Leavenworth, the film stars former Kansas basketball player Justin Wesley as Chamberlain. Kip Niven plays Forrest “Phog” Allen.

The film, which shows through April 7, is not rated and viewer discretion is advised.

Also opening April 1, “I Saw the Light” is the story of the country-western singer Hank Williams. The film chronicles his meteoric rise to fame and its effect on his health and personal life.

“I Saw the Light” is rated R for some language and brief nudity.
