Husker percussionist to kick off Jazz in June

The 29th annual Jazz in June concert series kicks off June 9 with an online performance by Andrew Wray, University of Nebraska–Lincoln student percussionist and composer.

The concert is 7 to 8 p.m. CST on the Jazz in June Facebook page.

Wray is a jazz drummer, percussionist, electronic musician and composer. The junior music major performs with the university’s Jazz Singers, Graduate Jazz Combo and Jazz Orchestra, as well as several jazz bands in the Lincoln and Omaha areas. He also teaches percussion in Lincoln. He traveled to China in June 2019, where he played with the Graduate Jazz Combo, performed original music and taught master classes. This year’s Jazz in June series, presented by the Cooper Foundation, features Nebraska artists who have fewer opportunities to perform during the coronavirus pandemic. Online concerts are 7 to 8 p.m. CST each Tuesday through July 7 on the Jazz in June Facebook page.

The other performances are:

  • June 16: Madeline Reddel Quintet — a vocal jazz group featuring Husker students and alumni

  • June 23: Andrew Janak Trio — led by a professor of jazz at Doane University, who earned his doctoral degree from Nebraska

  • June 30: Jackie Allen and Hans Sturm — a vocal-bass duet and hometown favorites

  • July 7: Mesonjixx — a trio led by soul-jazz artist Mary Lawson of Omaha

Jazz in June is a collaboration between the University of Nebraska, Lied Center for Performing Arts, Downtown Lincoln Association and Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Learn more.
