Along with participating in an E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues event, Anna Deavere Smith, a world-renowned actress, author and playwright, will present “Notes from the Field,” her unique one-woman show, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Through a special promotion, faculty and staff can attend the performance by purchasing $10 tickets through the Lied Center online and using the code “NOTES” at checkout. Students can reserve free tickets through the university’s Arts for All program.

In “Notes From the Field,” Smith, a Tony and Pulitzer Prize nominee, dramatizes real-life accounts of students, parents, teachers and administrators caught in America’s school-to-prison pipeline, which pushes underprivileged, minority youth out of the classroom and into incarceration.

This unique show focuses on lack of opportunity and resources for young people living in poverty, which often leads them into the criminal justice system. Drawn from interviews conducted by Smith with more than 250 people across the country, “Notes From the Field” finds Smith bringing to life the stories of real individuals, including current and former inmates, protestors, educators, police officers, community activists and politicians.

Due to language and subject matter, the show is recommended for audiences ages 13 and older.
