“The Eagle Huntress” and “The Love Witch” open Dec. 9 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

“The Eagle Huntress,” directed by Otto Bell, is a documentary about Aisholpan, a 13-year-old nomadic Mongolian girl who breaks a traditional role’s gender barrier.

Aisholpan trains to become the first female in 12 generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter. She rises to the pinnacle of a tradition that has been handed down from father to son for centuries.

This documentary features some of the most awe-inspiring cinematography ever captured in a documentary, giving this intimate tale of a young girl’s quest the dramatic force of an epic narrative film.

“The Eagle Huntress,” which is rated G, plays at the Ross through Dec. 15.

“The Love Witch,” directed by Anna Biller, offers homage to a bygone era, arranged subtly in service of a thought-provoking meditation on the battle of the sexes.

Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. She makes spells and potions and then picks up men to seduce. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder.

With a visual style that pays tribute to Technicolor thrillers of the ’60s, “The Love Witch” explores female fantasy and the repercussions of pathological narcissism.
