Ashfall Fossil Beds will celebrate its 30th anniversary, as well as the 150th anniversary of the University of Nebraska State Museum, with the Rockin’ Rhino Bash on June 26. From 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visitors can explore the site near Royal, participate in a variety of activities and partake of some birthday treats.

“Ashfall Fossil Beds is a truly unique site,” said Susan Weller, director of the NU State Museum. “We’re excited to celebrate the park’s 30th anniversary and recognize the important role it plays in research and education.”

The event will feature a fossil and artifact identification station. Experts from the museum’s paleontology collection and History Nebraska will be on hand to identify guests’ fossils and artifacts. Ashfall Fossil Beds will also announce details of a contest to name the park’s popular bronze rhino statues. Birthday treats in the form of UNL Dairy Store ice cream, cupcakes and kolaches will be available while supplies last.

Rockin’ Rhino Bash activities and treats are included with admission, which is $7.50 per person for those 3 and older. Museum members will receive free admission. Ashfall Fossil Beds will also accept Blue Star Museums tickets, which provide free admission for active-duty military and their families, including National Guard and Reserves, up to a party of six. Visitors will still need to acquire a state park permit. Permits can be acquired in advance from Nebraska Game and Parks.

“It is exciting to share this landmark occasion with all of our supporters by having a day to celebrate three decades of discovery, research and educational opportunities,” said Rick Otto, superintendent of Ashfall Fossil Beds. “We hope everyone in the community will take the time to join us for this fun event.”
