Applications are being accepted for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s fourth annual Science Slam.
The science communication contest is noon to 1:30 p.m. April 10 in the Wick Alumni Center, Great Hall. The event will allow student researchers to address the prompt, “What is the biggest misconception people have about your field and/or scientific research in general.” The prompt was selected by a campuswide vote. Participants must use examples from their own research.
The goal of the event is to share and promote university research across the divides of discipline, expertise and skill level.
Participation in the Science Slam is open to graduate, undergraduate and postdoctoral researchers in all scientific disciplines, including mathematics, engineering and the social sciences. Presenter applications are being accepted through March 4. Finalists will be announced March 11 and will each receive a $50 prize.
The winner will be decided by the audience at the Science Slam and will earn an additional $250.
The Science Slam will be emceed by Liz Neeley of Story Collider, who will also offer a workshop and coaching session exclusively for the finalists.
The event is free and open to the university community. Registration is required and a lunch buffet will be provided. There is no deadline to register, but space is limited to the first 100 registrants. Following the competition, Neeley will give a keynote talk, which is open to the public and does not require registration.
