As the University of Nebraska–Lincoln prepares for its annual winter shutdown, the Office of Sustainability is reminding Huskers to unplug electronics before leaving for the break.
Employees are encouraged to unplug monitors, desktop computers, chargers, coffee makers, lamps and other nonessential devices. All student employees should leave work devices on and plugged in to support the migration of devices as part of any scheduled migrations.
Many electronics continue to draw “vampire” or “phantom” energy even when switched off. While each device uses only a small amount, the total adds up to significant energy consumption across campus.
Unplugging devices during the shutdown helps reduce environmental impact and unnecessary costs, supporting the university’s sustainability goals. The same simple step can also help conserve energy at home.
The Office of Sustainability encourages all employees to take these steps to support the university’s energy-efficiency efforts during the break.
