Services for Students with Disabilities, which offers support to more than 1,000 University of Nebraska–Lincoln students each semester, has a new home in Louise Pound Hall.
The new location in Pound Hall offers ground-level access, accessible building entrances and two doorways with power openers. Nearly doubling the office’s footprint, the space can fully accommodate students in wheelchairs.
The adjacent Services for Students with Disabilities Testing Center offers multiple exam cubicles and five private rooms for exam accommodations. Cameras within the center allow faculty and staff to monitor students taking exams without distraction. Lighting within the testing center and offices can be adjusted to accommodate students for whom bright florescent bulbs can cause migraines.
A new designated exam drop-off location also makes it easy for faculty to comply with exam accommodations.
“The new space speaks volumes about the university’s commitment to diversity and that students with disabilities are included in that diversity,” said Sam Goodin, director of Services for Students with Disabilities.
Established in 1985 as the Educational Center for Disabled Students through a federal grant, Services for Students with Disabilities facilitates and integrates access to academic, social, cultural and recreational programs within the university while fostering independent decision-making skills for personal and academic success. Any students who needs a reasonable accommodation based on a qualified disability is required to register with the office for assistance.
