
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has announced three candidates for its next assistant vice chancellor/dean of students in the division of Student Life. Selected through a national search, the candidates will visit campus between Jan. 7-14.
The candidates are John Howe, Nicholas Kehrwald and Tyre McDowell. Each will deliver a public presentation as part of the interview process. Members of the campus community are encouraged to attend the presentations.
The assistant vice chancellor/dean of students for Student Life is a key leadership position that serves as the university’s chief student advocate. They advocate and provide vision and expertise to a network that fosters a culture of care and student success. The role leads a range of student services including support for students with disabilities, power-based violence education and advocacy, non-clinical case management and intervention, student mental health, and student conduct.

John Howe
Public presentation — 2:30 p.m., Jan. 7, Nebraska Union, Swanson Auditorium
Howe has a master’s degree from Texas A&M University and a doctorate from Indiana University. Currently serving as the vice provost for student affairs at Grand View University, Howe brings 22-plus years of higher education experience, including positions at the University of South Dakota, Navarro College and Indiana University.
Tyre McDowell
Public presentation — 2:30 p.m., Jan. 8, Nebraska Union, Swanson Auditorium
McDowell has a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Most recently serving as the chief of staff to the mayor of Lincoln, McDowell brings nine-plus years of higher education experience with positions at UNL and Nebraska Wesleyan University in combination with more than 20 years of non-profit experience.
Nicholas Kehrwald
Public presentation — 2:30 p.m., Jan. 14, Nebraska Union, Swanson Auditorium
Kehrwald has a master’s degree from the University of Missouri and a juris doctorate from the University of Iowa. Currently serving as the dean of students and deputy Title IX coordinator at University of South Carolina-Upstate, Kehrwald brings 15-plus years of higher education experience with positions at University of Kentucky, University of Kansas and University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
