Honors
Patricio Grassini, associate professor in agronomy and horticulture, has been awarded the 2020 Werner L. Nelson Award for Diagnosis of Yield-Limiting Factors by the American Society of Agronomy. The ASA presented the award during the society’s virtual annual meeting Nov. 11. Read the full story here.
Three student projects from the College of Architecture have been honored with awards from the Society of American Registered Architects, New York Council Design Awards program. Former master architecture students Hannah Christy and Craig Findlay earned a Design Award of Excellence and scholarship for their project “Tower of Babel” and an Award of Honor for “WaTeRS.” A third award was given to former master of architecture student Hannah Schafers, who received an Award of Honor for her project titled, “The Cloud House,” which was designed in Associate Professor and Architecture Program Director David Karle’s ARCH511 studio. A School of Art, Art History and Design graduate student, Max Henderson, and an alumnus, Patrick “P.J.” Hargraves, were two of 40 student artists nationwide to have work accepted into the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Juried Student Show. Read the full story here.
Yujia Wang, Landscape Architecture Professor of Practice, was named to the elite Forbes China 30 Under 30 list. Forbes names 300 outstanding young people under 30 who are active in various fields in China who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments and made a considerable impact in their field. Thyreos, a startup co-founded by Gary Pickard, professor of veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences, has received $750,000 to support the commercialization of a vaccine platform that protects cattle and hogs against their species-specific herpesviruses. The fundraising effort was led by Invest Nebraska, a nonprofit organization on Nebraska Innovation Campus that assists local entrepreneurs and invests in companies with growth potential. Publications
- An international panel of 13 scientists co-led by Robert Hutkins, Khem Shahani Professor of Food Science, reported a consensus definition of fermented foods in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Convened by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics, the panel also provided guidance to public health professionals, consumers and other scientists about the role of fermentation microbes and their metabolic products on the gut microbiome and human health.
