‘Purely Pink’ event celebrates women’s fitness

UNL Campus Rec is hosting “Purely Pink: A Women’s Fitness Event” from 3-6 p.m. Oct. 10 in the new Strength Training and Conditioning Room. The free event is open to all female UNL students and CREC members, focusing on helping women feel more comfortable using the free weights, machine weights and cardio equipment.

“Strength training and the use of weights is vital to a woman and the health of bones, muscles, posture and cardio,” said Katie Wilder, strength and conditioning coordinator. “Moderate use will not make girls ‘bulky’ but rather help to extend their life.”

At “Purely Pink,” ladies will complete a short orientation and have the chance to receive the following giveaways:

  • VS PINK gift bag filled with Husker apparel

  • VS PINK slap bracelet

  • VS PINK mini dog

  • Chair massage from Campus Rec Massage Therapy

All attendees can enjoy free popcorn, a shower tote from the University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union, a spin-to-win prize wheel from Celerion, an #ActiveHusker bracelet, sampling and coupons from Firehouse Subs and $5 body comp tests from Campus Rec’s personal trainers. All items and services are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Two free Muscle Max classes are offered at 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Fitness Room during the event. Participants build stamina and strength during this 30-minute blast of resistance training for muscle tone and endurance with a veteran instructor and get a free water bottle.

A Power and Strength Bootcamp catering to men will also take place 3-6 p.m. Oct. 10. Tires, battling ropes, a prowler push and other special equipment will be available for free use in Cook Pavilion. This event is a precursor to the “Strong Husker Competition,” which is open to both men and women, from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 12 in Cook Pavilion. “Strong Husker” is free to watch and $20 to compete. “Purely Pink” is the first event held in the newly-renovated City Rec Center, which opens two days prior. The expansion encompasses 10,570 sq. ft. to double the free weights zone and improve traffic flow. Additionally, new machine weights, treadmills, ellipticals and bikes will be installed as well as a new air system and Mondo® flooring. A new floor-to-ceiling glass wall facing the central hallway that leads from the atrium will enhance the renovation.
