As the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s plans for the fall semester coalesce, the campus community is encouraged to continue working remotely in July.

Announced by Chancellor Ronnie Green in a June 18 message to faculty and staff, the remote work extension is intended to reduce both the number of individuals on campus and the ongoing threat of COVID-19 infection. Under the guidelines outlined, employees can be on campus if necessary, particularly if work centers on preparations for the fall semester.

“We know as units prepare for the fall semester and students return to campus, we may need more employees to come back to an on-campus work environment,” Green said. “Where that is necessary, unit leaders are free to take certain steps.”

Central guidelines for campus operations in the month of July are:

• Unit leaders must abide by local health guidance. Those currently include wearing masks when indoors and observing social distancing.

• University-sponsored domestic and international travel continues to be prohibited through July 31.

• By encouraging remote working, flexible scheduling and other measures, unit leaders must continue to keep the density of individuals in the workplace to the minimum necessary.

The university is also offering guidelines for exceptions to working on campus. Any employee can use the options if they feel unsafe returning to campus.

Green’s message also outlined a framework created by the Forward to Fall committee and plans for additional facility openings.

The framework, available online, sets the path the university is taking to deliver on its missions of education, research, creative activity and engagement this fall.

Upcoming facility openings include:

• The Nebraska Union will open to the public July 1 with limited hours. The University Bookstore is already open. Starbucks also plans to open July 1. Other vendors are also expected to resume activity in the coming weeks.

• The Nebraska East Union opens to the public July 1 with limited hours. Areas that are open will be determined by ongoing construction and renovations. Learn more about the East Union renovation.

• The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center will remain closed through Aug. 3.

• Campus Recreation opened June 15 with limited hours. The summer Husker Kids and Husker Adventures day camps for youth will be offered in July.

• University Libraries will open the Adele Hall Learning Commons to university NCard holders starting July 6. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays.
