Musician turned documentarian Beth Harrington will attend the 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 opening night screening of her film, “The Winding Stream,” at UNL’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
The screening, part of the Ross’ Norman A. Geske Cinema Showcase, will include a question and answer session with Harrington.
Also opening Oct. 30 at the Ross is “Truth,” a film that stars Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett in a story about how a news report ruined Dan Rather’s career with CBS News.
“The Winding Stream” tells the story of family members A.P., Sara and Maybell Carter, who were among the first stars of country music.
The film traces the trio’s early musical success, the transformation of the act into the Carter Sisters, June Carter’s marriage to legend Johnny Cash, and the efforts of the present-day Carter family to keep the music alive. “The Winding Stream” explores the Carters’ musical and cultural contributions and features a who’s who of Americana music.
“The Winding Stream,” which is not rated, shows at the Ross through Nov. 5.
“Truth” is an independent feature film based on the book “Truth and Duty” by Mary Mapes. It follows the true story of Mapes (played by Blanchett), an award-winning CBS News journalist and Rather’s producer.
The film chronicles how Mapes and Rather uncovered a story that a sitting U.S. president may have been absent without leave from the National Guard for more than a year during the Vietnam War. When the story was exposed as being untrue, the ensuing scandal ruined Rather’s career, nearly changed a national election and almost took down all of CBS News.
“Truth,” rated R for language and a brief nude photo, shows through Nov. 12 at the Ross.
