UNL Recycling is seeking volunteers for Go Green for Big Red, a fifth-year program that encourages recycling on Cornhusker football home game days.

The effort, co-sponsored by Recycling Enterprises, focuses on parking lots and walkways around Memorial Stadium. During the 2012 football season, approximately 1,900 pounds of recyclables were collected per game.

“Go Green for Big Red encourages everyone to be environmentally responsible with game day celebrations,” said Prabs Shrestha, a UNL recycling coordinator. “This is a positive way Big Red fans can contribute to recycling and support a sustainable campus environment at UNL.”

Volunteers walk parking lots with green recycling bags and collect recyclable materials. Tailgaters are also given green recycling bags from volunteers and parking lot attendants. And, the program positions recycling containers by waste containers along pedestrian walkways.

Go Green for Big Red volunteers can be students, faculty, staff or members of the public. For more information, or to volunteer, contact the UNL recycling coordinators at recycling@unl.edu or 402-472-9139.
