The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is hosting a Relay For Life from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting on April 2 at the Campus Rec Center, courts 1-4. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
Relay For Life is the world’s largest fundraising event to fight cancer. The American Cancer Society is helping save more than 500 lives from cancer every day.
Register teams at relayforlife.org/unlne.
The opening ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Later in the evening the Survivors Lap, Luminaria Ceremony and Fight Back Ceremony take place.
The Survivors Lap is a time for cancer survivors to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate victories over cancer. Caregivers at Relay For Life are also recognized at this time.
After dark, people who have been touched by cancer are honored. The Luminaria Ceremony remembers loved ones lost to cancer. Candles are lit inside paper bags, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer. Participants walk a lap in silence.
Finally, the Fight Back Ceremony is a chance for participants to make a personal commitment to save lives by talking up the fight against cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against cancer.
Food will be provided for participants at the event.
