The documentaries “Seymour: An Introduction” and “An Honest Liar” open April 24 at UNL’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Both films play through April 30.
Directed by Ethan Hawke, “Seymour: An Introduction” is a study of the life of Seymour Bernstein, an American pianist, composer and teacher. Bernstein started playing the piano as a young boy and started teaching others how to play when he was 15. He enjoyed a long and illustrious career as a performer before giving it up to devote his time to help others develop their own gifts.
“An Honest Liar” is a documentary about James “The Amazing” Randi, a world-famous magician, escape artist and renowned enemy of deception.
The film explores Randi’s investigations that publicly exposed psychics, faith healers and con-artists. However, during his life, Randi created fictional characters/fake psychics and helped his partner and artist Jose Alvarez into a sham guru. When a shocking revelation in Randi’s personal life is discovered, it becomes unclear if he is the deceiver or the deceived.
