Students, staff to shave heads in support of childhood cancer

St. Baldrick's Shave for the Brave hopes to raise $20,000 for childhood cancer.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln students and staff will “Shave for the Brave” from 4-8 p.m. April 7 at Abel Hall in hopes of raising $20,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for childhood cancer research.

Last year the event raised over $12,000 and saw over 50 people take part in the Shave for the Brave. The goal this year is $20,000 and 60 participants.

“Our students have a passion to get involved and make a difference. The kids with cancer are our reason for it all,” said Carrie Fitzwater, residence director at Abel Hall south.

There are over a dozen major types of childhood cancers and countless subtypes. Most are different from adult cancers and require unique treatment. Donations raised through St. Baldrick’s fundraisers have made it possible to fund more than $178 million to support the development of childhood cancer treatments.

St. Baldrick’s Shave for the Brave event is sponsored by the National Residence Hall Honorary, the UNL Residence Hall Association and the Abel Residence Association.
