Students make the most of snow day

A rare snow day at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on Feb. 2 gave a group of students the chance to trade backpacks and books for some snowman building on Feb. 2.

David Fitzgibbon, director of video services with University Communications, captured the above video of students playing in the snow on the greenspace north of the Nebraska Union.

UNL canceled classes and campus events due a Groundhog Day storm that dumped 6.1 inches of snow at the Lincoln Airport. The decision to close the university was made the evening of Feb. 1 by the chancellor on the recommendation of the vice chancellor for business and finance. Local and regional weather conditions, local and regional forecasts and travel conditions, campus conditions and an evaluation of current available campus resources were considered.

The closure gave university employees time to safely clear snow and ice from campus sidewalks and parking lots, allowing UNL to reopen for classes on Feb. 3.
