Painter Roxa Smith, chosen by the New York Foundation for the Arts for a six-week artist residency at UNL’s Sheldon Museum of Art, will speak on her influences and current work 5:30 p.m. June 19 at the museum.

Smith’s talk, “My Voyage with Interiors,” will be followed by a reception and opportunity to visit her studio in Richards Hall, which is a short walk from Sheldon. The event is free and open to the public.

An exhibition of Smith’s work will be presented in Sheldon’s Focus Gallery July 11 through Aug. 17.

Smith’s residency is in conjunction with the touring exhibition “Basil Alkazzi: An Odyssey of Dreams: A Decade of Paintings.” The exhibition was curated by New York Foundation for the Arts board member Judith K. Brodsky, distinguished professor emerita at Rutgers University, founding director of the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at Rutgers and co-founder and co-director of the Rutgers Institute for Women and Art.

Her work has been seen at the George Billis Gallery in New York and Los Angeles, at the Governor’s Island Art Fair, the Cooperstown Art Association, Pilar Shephard Art Gallery on Prince Edward Island and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, among many other venues.

The New York Foundation for the Arts is one of the few nonprofit organizations in the country to provide artists in all disciplines with funding, professional development, information and resources at critical stages of their creative lives.
