Ross theater screens three new films
The films “Coming Home,” “Best of Enemies” and “Goodnight Mommy” open today at UNL’s Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
In “Coming Home,” Lu Yanshi (played by Chen Daoming) and Feng Wanyu (Gong Li) are a devoted couple forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner. The arrest comes just as Feng is incurred in an accident.
Lu is released in the final days of China’s Cultural Revolution, returning home to find that his wife has amnesia and remembers little of her past.
“Coming Home” is rated PG-13 for some thematic material.
“Best of Enemies” shows how television news changed forever in the summer of 1968.
Dead last in the ratings, ABC hired two public intellectuals — William F. Buckley Jr., and Gore Vidal — to debate each other during the Democratic and Republican national conventions. The conservative Buckley and liberal Vidal viewed each other’s political ideologies as dangerous for America. Their explosive exchanges devolved into vitriolic name-calling. The unscripted television drew viewers and ABC News’ ratings skyrocketed, opening a new era in public discourse.
“Best of Enemies” is rated R for sexual content/nudity and language.
In “Goodnight Mommy,” 9-year-old twin brothers await their mother in a lonesome countryside house. And, when their mother returns — heavily bandaged and forever changed by cosmetic surgery — the twins start to doubt that the woman is actually their mother, launching an existential struggle for identity and fundamental trust.
“Goodnight Mommy” is rated R for disturbing violent content and some nudity.
