The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center will show the National Theatre’s stage production of “War Horse,” broadcast live from London’s West End at 7 p.m. Feb. 27. An encore presentation is 3 p.m. March 2.

Since its first performance at the National Theatre in 2007, “War Horse” has become an international smash hit, capturing the imagination of 4 million people.

The Feb. 27 production will be broadcast live to cinemas around the world.

“War Horse,” based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel and adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford, takes audiences on a journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of World War I in France. Filled with stirring music and songs, the imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-size puppets operated by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

“National Theatre Live” is an initiative to broadcast live performances of plays from the National Theatre in London to cinema screens worldwide. Broadcasts in the first season, in 2009, were watched by more than 165,000 people on 320 screens in 22 countries. The broadcasts will also feature behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with artists.
