UNL’s City Campus Recreation Center will close the Strength Training and Conditioning Room and the Super Circuit for a four-day period, March 21-24.
The closure signals the start of a renovation and expansion of the Strength Training and Conditioning Room. All strength equipment and a portion of the cardio equipment will be relocated to racquetball court No. 1. The remaining cardio equipment will be placed in the Super Circuit’s current space.
“Spring Break is a near-perfect time for this move,” said Amy Lanham, Campus Rec’s associate director for facilities planning and operations. “The building has less foot traffic because of the student holiday and it keeps the construction timeline on schedule to be finished before students begin the fall semester. Thank you to all our students and members for their patience while we make these changes to improve their exercise and workouts.”
Court No. 1 will open for exercise and workouts on March 25. During the four-day period, the rest of the City Campus Rec center will be open. Students and campus rec members who wish to use free weights and weight machines should visit the Fleming Fields Annex Building on East Campus during the move.
Daily hours for both facilities are available online.
The Strength Training and Conditioning Room renovation is scheduled to run from early April to August.
The renovation will add 2,250 square feet of space, improving traffic flow and doubling the free weights zone. The project includes new machine weights, treadmills, elliptical machines, bikes, a new air system and flooring.
The renovation will be further enhanced by a floor-to-ceiling glass wall facing the central hallway which leads from the City Campus Rec Center’s atrium.
This project is part of the YES 2 Better Rec Centers referendum approved by UNL students in October 2010, which also included the new Outdoor Adventures Center (opening late spring) and new East Rec Center (opening spring 2015). The referendum appropriated student fees to make improvements to UNL’s recreation facilities and increase the amount of cardio and strength training equipment.
