Peace Corps recruiter hosts office hours

Stewart Mills with her host mom in Cambodia.

Stewart Mills, Peace Corps recruiter for Nebraska and Kansas, will host an information table on City and East campuses in the spring semester.

“I hope to be able to have one-on-one conversations with students and professors who are already interested in the Peace Corps, as well as introducing the opportunities and benefits of the Peace Corps to people who are unfamiliar,” Mills said. “I also want to use this table as a place for people to learn about my service as an English teacher and teacher trainer in Cambodia, and help applicants with the new application process.”

Mills will be available from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays in the Career Services office in the Nebraska Union and from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. most Thursdays in Hardin Hall. She will present information about the Peace Corps, the benefits of joining and how to apply.

“I will also have materials about the graduate school opportunities with Peace Corps, as well as the types of positions available in all the sectors, including the agriculture and environmental areas,” Mills said.

Mills’ primary assignment during her time in the Peace Corps was teaching English to seventh graders at a school in Cambodia. She also had secondary projects including an art club and a writing workshop.

“Working for the Peace Corps is unlike any other job,” Mills said. “No day is the same, and success can be measured by how many seeds you planted in the school garden that morning, how a child demonstrated correctly how to wash her hands, or even bargaining a good price for bananas at the market in the afternoon. I enjoy the phrase, ‘It’s the toughest job you’ll ever love,’ because it speaks to how the volunteer experience – while having many ups and downs – will be worth it in the end.”

Mills’ Peace Corp recruiter office hours in Hardin Hall are: 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 22, Feb. 5, Feb. 19, March 12, March 19, April 2, April 9, April 16, April 23 and April 30.
