Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to host open house Aug. 24

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will host an open house for its members and the public 1:30-3 p.m. Aug. 24. The event, sponsored by Tabitha, will be held at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel at 333 S. 13th st. The event’s theme is “A Toast to OLLI! Celebrating 10 years at UNL.”

OLLI and its partners will be hosting informational tables, while representatives from each course will be available to answer questions.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and there will be a look back at OLLI’s 10 years at UNL. Visitors will be able to join OLLI and register for courses.

For a $75 fee, OLLI members can enjoy five terms of courses, events and travel destinations per year. An immediate credit of $30 is assigned to attendees’ accounts to use for a course or event. Members also receive other discounts such as tickets to Abendmusik, Sheldon Friends of Chamber Music, Lincoln Community Playhouse and Nebraska Repertory Theatre.

OLLI’s 2014-15 theme is “1965-1975: Decade of Transformation.” Several course options, special events and a trip will highlight this stormy yet life-altering decade. Term 1, which begins Sept. 8, will have three courses associated with the decade.

  • “American First Ladies in a Transformative Decade” will focus on the lives and accomplishments of Lady Bird Johnson, Patricia Nixon and Betty Ford.

  • The U.S. Supreme Court will be under scrutiny in another course following the year’s theme: “The U.S. Supreme Court, Love It or Hate It: Decisions from the ’60s and ’70s.”

  • “Faith Questions the Vietnam War” will take an in-depth, participatory view of whether religion played a role in that highly contentious and dividing war.

Another upcoming course, and an OLLI exclusive, is a six-week, in-depth look at ethics in real-life situations.

“Ethics: The Struggle to Do What’s Right” features former UNL football coach and athletic director Tom Osborne, who will address ethics in sports, followed by discussions concerning ethics in business, media, medicine, law and in the bedroom.
