“Memphis,” the new Broadway musical inspired by the underground dance clubs of the 1950s in Memphis, plays the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 and 13.
Inspired by actual events, “Memphis” tells a tale of fame and forbidden love. The Tony Award-winning production is about a white radio disc jockey who wants to change the world and an African American club singer searching for her big break.
“Lied Center patrons love musical theater and ‘Memphis’ will be no exception,” said Bill Stephan, executive director of the Lied Center. “This show goes far beyond world class songs and fantastic dancing. It has real cultural significance and transports audiences back in time to the center of the Civil Rights movement in the South. Theater lovers, history buffs and everyone in between will love this show.”
Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, “Memphis” features a Tony-winning book by Joe DiPietro (“I Love You,” “You’re Perfect,” “Now Change”) and a Tony-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan. The production is directed by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (“Xanadu”), with choreography by Sergio Trujillo (“Jersey Boys”).
Ticket prices start at $45 for adults and $22.50 for students. For more information, go to http://www.liedcenter.org, the Lied box office or call 402-472-4747.
