Elizabeth “Libby” Jones, professor of civil engineering, has received the top adviser award from Engineers Without Borders – USA.

Elizabeth “Libby” Jones, professor of civil engineering, has received Engineers Without Borders — USA’s Peter J. Bosscher Faculty Adviser Award for Outstanding Leader. The award honors faculty advisers who provide leadership and mentorship to individual EWB chapters.

Jones has served as co-adviser to the University of Nebraska’s student EWB chapter since it formed in 2008. She is also vice chair on the national group’s faculty leadership council.

The award praised Jones’ “level of encouragement and inspiration” and her ability to help them navigate both at the university level and across cultures with a community partnership in Madagascar.

“(Jones) has a passion for the EWB-USA Chapter at the University of Nebraska, EWB-USA’s mission throughout the world and, especially, the people and communities she and our students are helping,” said Dan Linzell, chair of civil engineering at UNL. “The University of Nebraska EWB chapter is making a difference due to her leadership and this award is extremely well deserved.”

EWB-NU installs sustainable drinking water and solar power in Kianjavato, Madagascar. Kianjavato is a commune which helps preserve habitat for endangered animals near a field station operated by Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo.

EWB-USA is a non-profit humanitarian organization partnering with developing communities and providing engineering services through our volunteer chapter members to implement the infrastructure necessary to meet basic human needs.
