Jazz Orchestra, Big Band open concert season

The UNL Jazz Orchestra, directed by Eric Richards, and the UNL Big Band, directed by Dave Stamps, will present their first concert of the 2013-14 academic year at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in Kimball Recital Hall. The guest artist for this concert will be bass trombonist Jonathan Warburton from the UK.

The concert program will feature a wide range of music for big band, soloists from both ensembles, as well as the Nebraska premiere of Dr. Richards’ arrangement of “Bolivia,” performed in tribute to the late composer-pianist Cedar Walton.

As one of England’s busiest bass trombonists on the music scene today, Warburton is actively involved in a wide array of musical performances. A versatile performer, Jonathan plays in several different big bands and is an active member of the British Trombone Society where he regularly performs new material for bass trombone. Warburton has had over 30 original works written for him by modern composers.

As an educator and leader in the newest concepts of teaching low brass performance, Warburton has conducted master classes not only in England, but invitations from prominent universities and music conservatories have taken him to the United States, Australia, South Africa and Canada.
