The 25th season of Jazz in June at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln continues June 14 with a performance by the Tizer Quartet featuring Eric Marienthal.
Jazz in June concerts are at 7 p.m. each Tuesday in June in the sculpture garden immediately west of UNL’s Sheldon Museum of Art. The series is free, but attendees are encouraged to make a donation to help ensure its continuation.
Along with the performance, the concert series also features a marketplace with 19 vendors offering food, drinks and artisan crafts; VIP seating; basic yoga lessons; campus garden tours; and free bicycle parking by UNL’s BikeValet service.
Launched in 1991 as a way to bring a younger audience to Sheldon Museum of Art, the series has grown to draw thousands to each concert. This year, Jazz in June has become an independent campus entity, with oversight provided by UNL and the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
The Tizer Quartet featuring Eric Marienthal, a nominee for “Jazz Group of the Year,” features an all-star lineup of musicians and plays a unique blend of original, high-energy jazz. The group has been described as, “a torchbearer for a new generation of contemporary jazz.”
The group is led by Lao Tizer, pianist, keyboardist, composer and former “Best New Jazz Artist” nominee. It also features Marienthal, a Grammy award-winning saxophonist; Gene Coye, a Chicago-native and drummer; and bass legend Ric Fierabracci.
The Tizer Quartet has performed throughout the region and around the world, including Jazz on the Green in Omaha, Jarasum International Jazz Fest in South Korea, the Dubai Jazz Fest and Martinique Jazz Fest.
Remaining performers in the 2016 jazz concert lineup are Jackie Allen on June 21 and Tim Doherty’s Nine Plus One on June 28.
Concertgoers are allowed to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Pets are not allowed.
