Holocaust remembrance recital is May 4

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music faculty members Karen Becker, cello, Kate Butler, mezzo-soprano and Susan Levine Ourada, dance; with Michael Cotton, piano and UNL and SLOdance dancers will present Seed of Dream and Other Visions

The Glenn Korff School of Music hosts “Seed of Dream and Other Visions: A Holocaust Remembrance Recital” at 7:30 p.m. May 4 in Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 general admission and $3 students/senior citizens.

The performance will feature UNL faculty Karen Becker, cello; Kate Butler, mezzo-soprano; Susan Levine Ourada, dance; and Michael Cotton, piano. UNL’s SLOdance dancers will also perform.

The repertoire will include “From Jewish Life” by Ernest Bloch; “Quatuor Pour la Fin du Temps” (“The Fifth Movement”) by Olivier Messiaen; “Elegy and Vision for Solo Cello” by Laurence Sherr and “The Seed of Dream” by Lori Laitman, a song cycle for mezzo, cello and piano.

The title and music of “Elegy and Vision” are intended to convey feelings of mourning as well as a sense of resolution and hope. Sherr said the piece is a tribute, in part, to all who perished in the Holocaust.

“The Fifth Movement” was composed and performed while Messiaen while he was in a concentration camp.

“Seed of Dream” features several poems of Vilna Ghetto survivor Abraham Sutzkever. It was commissioned by Music of Remembrance and premiered at the 2005 Holocaust rememberance concert in Seattle, Wash.
