Guest WiFi extended to 7-day access

UNL-GUEST is one of several campus SSIDs

Wireless access for visitors to the UNL campus has been extended to a seven-day enrollment. In December, UNL began offering a unique SSID named “UNL-GUEST” that provides internet access to campus visitors.

Campus visitors can select the “UNL-Guest” network SSID and input name, email and mobile phone numbers. An access code is sent instantly via text and email to the mobile device to grant individuals access to the network. Each access credential expires after seven days. Visitors may re-register to extend their access.

“We listened to feedback from our visitors and the campus,” said Jay Wilmes, Information Technology Services network support associate. “Giving our guests WiFi access a week at a time matched up better with the average length of their stay.”

Guest wifi was originally introduced with same-day access that required visitors to renew access each day.

UNL-Guest allows outbound access to public internet sites, while limiting access to UNL domains. Visitors from participating institutions may also use the eduroam SSID.

The UNL-Guest service is reserved for visitors only. Students, faculty and staff are required to register devices at http://wifi.unl.edu and are encouraged to use the encrypted UNL-AIR-E WiFi. UNL personnel may use eduroam when visiting other participating institutions.
