“Granite Hi-Chair,” a towering sculpture by Jesús Moroles, was installed March 8 on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus near the College of Business Administration and Sheldon Museum of Art.

“We are thrilled to welcome a Jesus Moroles sculpture to campus,” said Wally Mason, Sheldon’s director and chief curator. “‘Granite Hi-Chair’ is a significant work within the artist’s career and will quickly become a tremendous resource for educational initiatives that draw on the wealth of public art in the museum’s collection.”

Moroles, who died in an automobile accident in 2015, made full use of the challenges his chosen medium – granite – presented. He employed a process of combining raw and finished stone to metaphorically address how humanity intersects with nature.

“Granite Hi-Chair,” which comprises ladder-like steps leading to a seat attached to an overly tall, lean back, is exemplary of the artist’s technique.

The artwork is a gift to the museum from collectors Karen and Robert Duncan.
