Firefox release affects Office 365 access for Mac, Linux users

Mac and Linux users are unable to access Office 365 webmail via the latest release of the Firefox web browser, version 30. An alternate web browser like Safari must be used to access webmail for Mac and Linux users.

Webmail access is not impacted on Windows-based computers using Firefox. Other university systems, including Firefly, appear to operate normally using all standard browsers.

The latest version of Firefox, scheduled for release June 11, uses stricter security controls which fail to negotiate typical network protocols and results in a “404 File not found” error message. UNL Information Technology Services will redirect Mac- and Linux-based Firefox v30 users to receive the following message when trying to access webmail: “The latest version of Firefox for Mac is incompatible with Office 365. Please access mymail.unl.edu with Safari or an alternate browser.”

The issue has been reported to Mozilla, but no activity or timeline for possible resolution has been announced.
