The critically acclaimed “Whiplash,” starring Miles Teller as an ambitious jazz drummer and J.K. Simmons as his ruthless teacher, opens at 5:05 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. “Birdman,” starring Michael Keaton, will continue.

Both films are rated R and play through Dec. 4.

Andrew Neyman is an ambitious young jazz drummer and is single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite east coast music conservatory. Plagued by the failed writing career of his father, Andrew hungers day and night to become one of the greats. Terence Fletcher, an instructor equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, leads the top jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, forever changing the young man’s life. Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability and his sanity.

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Birdman,” or “The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance,” is a dark comedy telling the story of an actor — famous for portraying an iconic superhero — as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career and himself.

“Whiplash” will show at 5:05 p.m., 7:25 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. “Birdman” will show at 4:45 p.m., 7:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.
