‘Blue Echoes’ artist to speak at quilt museum

"Cosmos II" is now showing in "Blue Echoes: Quilts by Shizuko Kuroha" at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. Kuroha will offer a lecture on April 1 and a demonstration on April 2 at the museum.

A new exhibition at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum features the work of internationally renowned artist Shizuko Kuroha. The artist will give a free lecture on April 1 and a demonstration on April 2.

“Blue Echoes: Quilts by Shizuko Kuroha” is the first ever solo exhibition by a Japanese artist at the IQSCM. For more than 30 years, Kuroha has been a leader in the Japanese studio quilt movement. She gives a unique take to familiar patterns using antique indigo-dyed textiles and traditional sarasa fabrics.

“We are delighted to have ‘Blue Echoes’ on display,” said Leslie Levy, executive director of the museum. “Visitors will thoroughly enjoy spending time viewing this exhibition as each quilt is stunningly beautiful and artfully complex.”

Kuroha will speak about her quilt making at 5:30 p.m. April 1 at the IQSCM, 1523 N. 33rd St. Admission to the lecture is free in conjunction with First Friday events. In addition to the lecture, the evening will serve as a grand opening for her exhibition, feature a book talk from historian Teresa Duryea Wong at 4 p.m. and a book signing by Kuroha and Wong at 4:30 p.m. in the museum shop.

Kurhoa will return to the museum at 11 a.m. April 2 to give a demonstration.

“We hope the public will join us for both Ms. Duryea Wong’s talk and Kuroha-san’s lecture,” Levy said. “It is an honor to have two renowned experts with us. Their presentations are guaranteed to enlighten and entertain.”

“Blue Echoes” will be on display at the museum through May 25.

The online exhibition for “Blue Echoes” is available online.
