UNL will host its 13th annual Big Red Road Show from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 1 at Marcus Midtown Cinema, 3201 Farnam St. in Omaha. This free event provides high school students with a sense of what college life is like.
“The Big Red Road Show is always a popular and beneficial event for high school students and their families,” said Amber Williams, director of admissions. “The thought of college can be intimidating for some. We like to provide a fun way to learn more about life at the university.
“To facilitate that, we’ve completely redeveloped the Road Show this year — we’ve changed the venue, mixed up the way interaction happens and created all-new programming. We want to give students and parents from the Omaha area a new experience.”
Coordinating with the theme “Husker Cinema,” this is the first year the event will be held at Marcus Midtown Cinema. The unique venue in the heart of Omaha will provide attendees with four floors of interactive activies to explore, including a red carpet welcome experience. Five theaters will feature entertainment unique to UNL, Omaha schools and community organizations. Free popcorn, soda and major prize giveaways will be available.
Students and their parents can explore more than 25 interactive booths showcasing Nebraska’s opportunities through academic excellence and student life by interacting with faculty, staff and current students. Representatives from all UNL undergraduate colleges, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, First-Year Experience and Transition Programs, Scholarships and Financial Aid, and Career Services will be on hand.
Highlights of the event include:
Presentations from Pulitzer Prize winner and UNL journalism professor of practice Matt Waite, the UNL Dance Department, the UNL Pep Band, an interactive performance of “Famous Figures from the Past” and a special screening of a short film created by UNL students;
Talent showcase featuring special performances from current UNL students and high schools across the Omaha metro area;
Drawings for prizes;
Free popcorn and soda for all in attendance;
A free Marcus Theatre movie ticket for students K-12; and
A free T-shirt to all high school students who visit each exhibit.
