‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,’ ‘Austenland’ open at the Ross

Scene from "Ain't Them Bodies Saints," playing at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center through Oct. 3.

The drama “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, and the romantic comedy “Austenland,” starring Keri Russell, open Sept. 27 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

“Austenland” is rated PG-13 and plays through Sept. 26. “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” is not rated and plays through Oct. 3.

Set against the backdrop of 1970’s Texas Hill Country, “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” is a romantic American story that follows three characters on various sides of the law — outlaw Bob Muldoon (Casey Affleck), his wife Ruth Guthrie (Rooney Mara), and a local sheriff named Patrick Wheeler (Ben Foster). The film, which is the second feature from writer-director David Lowery, was developed at the Sundance Institute’s Writing and Producing Labs. It also stars Nate Parker and Keith Carradine. The film received the U.S. Dramatic Cinematography Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

“Austenland” is a romantic comedy about 30-something, single Jane Hayes (Keri Russell), a seemingly normal young woman with a secret: her obsession with all things Jane Austen. But when she decides to spend her life savings on a trip to an English resort catering to Austen–crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency–era gentleman suddenly become more real than she ever could have imagined. Based on the novel by Shannon Hale (who also co-wrote the script), the film was written and directed by Jerusha Hess and produced by Stephenie Meyer’s Fickle Fish Films.
